HISTORY
Sensing the need for Montessori elementary education in the McLean area during the early 1970's, Joan Marie Parasine, former headmistress, started a class for elementary students based on the curriculum developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Soon thereafter, the close of a nearby Montessori school necessitated adding a primary (preschool) class to the program. In 1973, the Montessori School of McLean opened with one primary and one elementary class. Since that time, six more primary classes have been added and the elementary class has been expanded to include the upper elementary level in addition to the lower elementary classes (first through sixth grade.) Cultural classes were added to the program throughout the years and now include Art, Spanish or French, Music, Drama, Library, Science Lab, Technology Lab, Physical Education, and Writing Workshop. (The cultural program changes from time to time and some programs are limited to the elementary level.) In 1998, a grand celebration was held to commemorate our 25th year. Now, after 37 wonderful years, the facilities have expanded to include a multi-purpose room (gymnasium, stage, gathering space), science and computer lab, and expanded classroom sizes. The Co-Heads of School are Meredith Wood (Academic Head) and Thomas Le Grand (Business Head), and Ms. Parasine is still a vital member of the MSM community.
