Academics Overview

The Montessori Method is at the heart of MSM

We believe that if children love coming to school, then the possibilities are endless!  Montessori’s unique style of education is more than just that – it is a way of life!  Children are given the space they need to develop at their own pace, able to move ahead or review as necessary.  Classes are multi-aged, so that children can learn in a variety of ways.  Younger children look up to the older children, and are motivated by what they are doing.  Older children, in turn, are classroom leaders and role models, and learn by teaching the younger children.  In other words, children develop in cycles of

Novice > Apprentice > Mentor

The development of leadership skills begins from the very start!

Please see each level’s individual page for more details about the program, along with a photo gallery showing many fun and meaningful activities.

PRE-PRIMARY (TODDLER) – 2 YEAR OLDS

Our adorable two Pre-Primary (2 year old) classes are designed to allow the children full access and exploration of the environment.  The spacious environment consists of two rooms connected by a toilet learning area.  The children have gross motor activities, a book corner, and numerous Montessori materials that allow them to develop fine motor skills and concentration. The Toddlers also have their own playground with equipment sized for them.  The main focuses of this level are development of concentration, independence, social/emotional, language, and motor skills.  Two year olds are very capable and want to care for themselves and their environment.  The Toddler class is a lot of fun to watch and be in!

The Toddler children attend five mornings a week until noon (Extended Day and Aftercare are available).

PRIMARY – 3-6 YEAR OLDS

The energetic Primary (preschool and kindergarten) environment is a continuation of the Toddler level, and is divided into four main categories: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, and Mathematics.  In addition to these curricular areas, our students learn Science, Geography, Cultural Studies, Music, Art, and Gross Motor development.

The three and four year old children attend five mornings a week until noon (Extended Day and Aftercare available until 5:30), and Kindergarten students attend five days a week until 3:30 (Aftercare available until 5:30).  Children may stay for the full-day in their Montessori classroom if they will be turning five during the school year.  Kindergarten students are the leaders of the Primary environment.  We have four Primary classes.

ELEMENTARY – 6-12 YEAR OLDS

Our vibrant Elementary community benefits from building on the work completed at the Primary level, using dynamic manipulatives to materialize abstract principles.  These manipulative materials help the students understand the “why” in how the world works, and helps them move from concrete to abstract understanding.  The rich curriculum includes Mathematics, Language Arts (reading, grammar, writing, spelling, creative writing), Science, Geography, History, and Character Development.  Students take Standardized Assessments twice per year as one method of determining student progress.

Students attend five full-days a week (Aftercare available until 5:30).  We have three Lower Elementary (ages 6-9) classes, and one Upper Elementary (ages 9-12) class.  The four classes often work together and collaborate on projects, creating a strong environment for social development.
